George Perry wants to understand why we age so he can change the course of diseases like Alzheimer’s. Dean of UTSA’s College of Sciences, Perry is one of the most cited researchers of Alzheimer’s, in part because of his innovative work. The most common form of dementia, Alzheimer's affects about 5.4 million people in the U.S., 340,000 in Texas.
Perry's research is primarily focused on how Alzheimer’s disease develops through aging and the physiological consequences of the disease at a cellular level. In a recent article for Science Watch, he said: “Organisms respond to the context they're in. It's true for people, too. And that's relevant to how one thinks about Alzheimer's.” He is working to determine the sequence of events leading to damage caused by increased oxidative stress—a stance that differs from other findings.
Having a renowned faculty member like Perry at UTSA attracts other talent, both students and faculty. His visionary work is bringing recognition to UTSA and provides top-tier opportunities right here in San Antonio.
