UTSA Alumni Tailgate
Helping Build Pride & Tradition
UTSA’s alumni members just got thrown a pass: free admission to all home game Tailgate parties. Touchdown! Score!
This year, the UTSA community and Roadrunner fans will also notice a new and bigger location – closer to all the action.
“What’s different this year from last year is we now have our own space right at Sunset Station, 200 yards from the Alamodome,” said Jim Mickey, associate vice president for alumni programs and marketing, whose team has been busy planning the biggest and best tailgate parties of the season.
The Alumni Association will provide a family-friendly place that will serve as the main Tailgate location for UTSA alums and Roadrunner fans to gather before the game that will be at the center of all the action, including the high-energy Spirit Walk which features a lively procession of UTSA’s marching band, football players, cheerleaders and Rowdy.
“Tailgating before the game is so much a part of the football tradition that we want to continue building here at UTSA,” Mickey said. “We want to invite the entire UTSA community and the general public to join us, to be part of the fun and excitement of game day by bringing your family and friends to our tailgate. Join us in building the biggest and best tailgate at every home game.”
Alumni Tailgates will take place during all home games from 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and be located on Hoefgen Ave. in Parking Lot 2, between Sunset Station and the Alamodome (look for the alumni tents and flags). Admission is free for children under 12 and $10 for guests/non-members. Association members are asked to bring their membership cards to receive their free admission
“We’ll have plenty of shade with over 15 tents, swamp coolers, cold beer and water, giveaways, and great food,” Mickey said. The Tailgate menu on Sep. 8 will feature Kiolbassa sausage wraps, chicken and beef fajitas, chips and salsa, and microbrewery beers.
Mickey emphasizes that membership in the Alumni Association will get you free admission to all six home game Alumni Tailgate parties beginning with UTSA’s football season opener September 8. The tailgate parties alone are worth $60 and annual membership to the alumni association is only $40. “Our alumni tailgate is a great value when you consider all you’re getting and what you’d be paying inside the Alamodome on concessions alone,” he said.
Need something to wear on game day? Membership in the Alumni Association also gets you a 10% discount on all UTSA merchandise purchased from the online store at “shoputsa.com” and the UT Co-Op store in The Quarry Market. Each year, a portion of these merchandise sales benefit student scholarships. In fact, the UT Co-Op recently donated $32,000 in scholarship monies for FY 2012-2013.
Sponsors of UTSA’s Alumni Tailgate are Frost Bank, Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union, Liberty Mutual Insurance, Freetail Brewing Co., Ranger Creek Brewing & Distilling and Willie’s Grill & Ice House.

UTSA Alumni Association Chooses Kiolbassa Sausage for Tailgates at Roadrunner Home Games
“We’re thrilled to once again partner with UTSA and Roadrunner football and all of their alumni fan base as they build on year two of their Division I football program,” says Kiolbassa President Michael Kiolbassa, who is the third generation Kiolbassa to head the 63-year-old company situated on the city’s Westside.
Every UTSA Roadrunner home game –dates include Sept. 8, 22nd, Oct. 6, 20th, 27th, Nov. 10 and 24th--will feature a UTSA Alumni Association-sponsored tailgate party.
“We are excited to have Kiolbassa join us as a tailgate sponsor for our second season. We have lots of alumni, friends and family show up for our pre-game tailgates, which also include locally brewed beers,” explains Mickey, adding that this year the alumni tailgating destination will be on the north end of the Alamodome in the Staybridge parking lot across the street from Sunset Station.
“We’re still signing up volunteers, so it’s not too late to, in tailgater vernacular, join us in the parking lot,” says Mickey. Anyone interested can contact Steve Woodall, events manager, UTSA Office of Alumni Programs, at 210-458-4133 or email him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Kiolbassa brand sausage is made with choice beef and pork, fresh spices, and has no fillers, no MSG, is naturally smoked and is gluten free.
This year alone, the 25,000-sq.-ft. plant will produce more than 10.5 million pounds of sausage. The company’s position as the number one selling premium smoked sausage in Texas was built on a commitment of quality inspiring its popular branding statement “Real Meat, Real Smoke, Real Sausage!”
Kiolbassa’s decade-long football tailgating tradition has been featured nationally in Tailgater Monthly magazine, and also on the Food Network. Currently, Kiolbassa is available in more than 1,400 stores in 21 states. Kiolbassa is available in all local grocery stores.

Greetings from the Office of Admissions at UTSA
My name is Lee Canales and I have the pleasure of serving as the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Recruitment. I am also a proud alumnus of UTSA, having graduated in 2001.
In my position I have had the opportunity to meet countless UTSA alumni and a common question I receive is: “How can I give back to UTSA?” My response is always the same: “You can give your time!”
Volunteering to represent UTSA at recruitment events is mutually beneficial to you and the university. You are able to show your pride for your alma mater and stay plugged into happenings and changes on campus. The Office of Admissions is able to have a presence when otherwise we may not have been available.
Houston and Dallas are two areas where our alumni have been graciously participating in our events for the last decade. Will you be next? This is your Call to Action! Volunteer Today!
